Venting a Plumbing System

Venting a plumbing system is perhaps one of the most important developments that made indoor plumbing more popular in the late 1800s. Until that time, vent pipes, which allow for odors and gas to escape to the outside of a building, were generally under-sized and in cold climate, they would clog with frost. Finally, through trial and error, plumbers realized the need for larger diameter pipes for venting, and eventually vent caps to prevent rain or critters from getting into vent pipes.
