Vent pipes came into use in the mid to late 1800s as indoorplumbing became more widely adopted and as cities grewand need to vent the gases in sewers. In London, theyneeded to vent their ever growing sewer system as it madeits way toward the tidal basin of the Thames River. Theyinstalled “stench” or “stink” pipes throughout London.Since many of them were installed during the Victorianera, stink pipes designs are quite ornate!
