Addressing the Plumber Shortage: Investing in the Next Generation of Skilled Trades

As we move into a more AI-driven, remote work model, it can be easy to forget that a large portion of career opportunities are trades-based and hands-on. Georgia is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, and Jackson County, one of the main counties we serve, is the fastest-growing in the state as of 2024. Despite this growth, Georgia faces a significant shortage of skilled trades professionals, particularly plumbers.

The Plumber Shortage in Georgia

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Georgia ranks 47th in the nation for plumbers per 100,000 people, with fewer than 90 plumbers per 100,000 residents. Currently, there are around 3,500 master plumbers in the state, and it is estimated that 60% of them are over the age of 60. In stark contrast, as of 2022, the Georgia Board of Healthcare Workforce (GBHCW) estimated that 141,117 nurses were actively licensed in Georgia, which is 1,329 nurses per 100,000 residents.

These numbers highlight the severity of the skilled trades shortage. The aging workforce and lack of new professionals entering the field create a pressing need for more plumbers to meet the growing demand.

MasterCraft Plumbing’s Commitment to the Future

At MasterCraft Plumbing, we recognize the importance of investing in the next generation of plumbers. To address the shortage and ensure our communities continue to receive essential services, we are helping to found a trades school dedicated to training and developing new plumbers. Our goal is not only to meet our own staffing needs but also to contribute to the education and growth of a new generation of skilled trades professionals.

The Importance of Skilled Trades

Plumbers play a crucial role in maintaining public health and safety by providing clean drinking water and sanitary waste disposal. As the population grows, the demand for these essential services will only increase. By investing in education and training, we aim to ensure that our communities remain safe and well-served.

Conclusion

The shortage of skilled trades professionals, particularly plumbers, is a significant challenge facing Georgia. At MasterCraft Plumbing, we are committed to addressing this issue by investing in the next generation of plumbers through education and training. By doing so, we aim to secure a bright future for our industry and ensure the continued safety and well-being of our communities.
